If you let them, they’ll steal your heart with their downtempo ambience and tastefully blended samples without a second thought. Ever since their formation in 1995, Thievery Corporation has slipped into the social consciousness and playlists all around of the lounge-loving music collective. Curators of a medley of musical styles involving, dub, trip hop, jazz, bossa nova, and world music carefully crafted into tracks that don’t club you over the head so much as they invade your subconscious and score the soundtrack of day to day activities, the duo consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton shroud their deep lyrics in unobtrusively chill and utterly listenable grooves.
If their close to two decades long collaboration hasn’t clued you in on the group’s endearing appeal, their sold-out shows at famed venues such as the Hollywood Bowl, Theatro Vrahon Melina Merkouri in Athens, Greece, Shepard’s Bush Empire in London, etc., and their collaborations with a roster of world talent numbering Perry Farrell, David Byrne, Wayne Coyne, Emiliana Torrini and Pam Bricker in its midst, including a Grammy nomination, should no doubt do the trick.
This May 7th, Thievery Corporation plays the Jazz Fest After Dark along with some yet to be announced special guests. Hosted by Insomniac, Soul’d Out, Ampersand, and Dead Nation Presents, the performance will take place at The Sugar Mill in New Orleans, a spacious and sprawling venue with plenty of leg and elbow room for attendees. Catch the politically charged duo at their ambient best before the new album drops in June.
