A venue huge enough for sound to be re-projected from all angles, dark enough to make you feel like it’s intimate, with light projections coming from the stage reminding you your Friday nights are spent partying, but to LIVE music. Vanguard was the ideal setting for Friday night DJ's Gibson and M.A.N.D.Y. featuring Phillip Jung to woo the party-eager, Hollywood crowd. Gibson got us warmed up with thick beats and resounding harmonies. The music was gripping but the way he engaged the crowd could made bystanders blush. Fist-pumping, outstretched arms, and fervently yelling things like "[something] MOTHERFUCKERS" gave the crowd no choice but to embrace the music with equal passion. Let’s not forget the backdrop visualizer of mini squares that individually lit up then collectively pulsated to the hard beats. When Phillip of M.A.N.D.Y. took the stage, the crowd was ready for Chapter 2 of an unfurling beat odyssey. Phillip of M.A.N.D.Y. loves the dichotomous yet compatible combination of organic sounds with electro. Rubber band synths and harpooning drums made moments feel earthy and tribal. These moments just made the crowd dance harder in anticipation for the culmination. I think it’d be accurate to call Phillip of M.A.N.D.Y. a tease, but a successful one that eventually delivers—the best kind. His transitions kept the crowd waiting and took them over the edge, re-engaging them for that final moment of reverie. I’m definitely a sucker for lights (who doesn’t appreciate tickling one more of their senses at a concert?) so I was hypnotized by Phillip of M.A.N.D.Y.’s laser projections. Altogether, the night left us gratified with highly danceable beats and electro psychedelia. Cheers to Vanguard and cheers to Gibson and Phillip of M.A.N.D.Y. for making a night in Hollywood what it should be.
